Protoss

Ancient psionic warriors with powerful but costly technology

The Protoss are an ancient alien race wielding immense psionic abilities and technology far beyond that of the other races. In competitive Brood War, Protoss is the "quality over quantity" race — their units are the most expensive but individually the most powerful, protected by regenerating plasma shields layered on top of base hit points. Buildings must be placed within Pylon power fields, and once warped in, they construct themselves automatically, freeing Probes to return to mining.

Strengths

Protoss fields the strongest individual units in the game. A single Zealot can defeat multiple Zerglings, and a Dragoon has more raw stats than any comparably-priced unit from another race. Plasma shields regenerate over time on every unit and building, providing a form of passive healing that rewards disengaging and re-engaging. The Probe warp-in mechanic is a significant economic advantage — Probes can immediately return to mining after starting a building, while SCVs and Drones are tied up during construction. Protoss has access to the game's most powerful spells: Psionic Storm deals 112 armor-ignoring damage, Recall teleports entire armies, and Stasis Field can remove half an enemy force from a fight. Observers provide permanent, invisible detection across the map.

Weaknesses

Protoss units are the most expensive in the game, meaning each unit lost hurts proportionally more. The Pylon dependency is a critical vulnerability — destroying key Pylons can disable multiple production buildings simultaneously, crippling army production at a crucial moment. Protoss production is slow compared to Zerg's larva-based system and Terran's ability to produce from multiple Barracks. Early-game harassment options are limited compared to Terran Vultures or Zerg Zerglings, making Protoss more reliant on scouting and reactive play in the opening minutes. Large unit models like Dragoons and Reavers struggle in tight choke points, often blocking each other.

Key Units

The Zealot is the premier melee tank, absorbing damage with its 160 total HP (60 shields + 100 HP) and dealing strong melee damage, especially with Leg Enhancements for speed. The Dragoon is the core ranged unit, versatile and durable with 180 total HP (80 shields + 100 HP). The High Templar provides Psionic Storm, the most powerful area damage spell in the game — many Protoss games are won or lost on Storm accuracy. The Corsair controls the skies in PvZ with its splash anti-air attack and Disruption Web. The Reaver delivers devastating Scarab shots (up to 125 damage each) via Shuttle drops, enabling the iconic Reaver drop micro that defines high-level Protoss play.

Competitive Meta

In the modern meta, Protoss gameplay revolves around timing attacks and decisive mid-game engagements. PvT features Gateway-heavy builds with Storm drops and Arbiter Recall in the late game, attempting to break Terran siege lines. PvZ involves Corsair openings for air control followed by ground-based timing attacks with Zealot/Dragoon/High Templar. PvP is an explosive mirror matchup defined by Reaver drops and Dragoon micro, where a single well-placed Scarab can end the game instantly.

Famous Players

Bisu (Kim Taek Yong) revolutionized PvZ with his Corsair/Dark Templar build, widely regarded as the greatest Protoss player ever. Rain (Jung Yoon Jong) is the dominant modern-era Protoss, known for flawless macro and consistency in ASL. Snow (Lee Dong Jae) is a top-tier modern Protoss player with deep strategic understanding. Stork (Song Byung Goo) was a legendary player famous for his elegant style and multiple finals appearances. Reach (Kim Dong Joon) was one of the earliest Protoss stars, pioneering aggressive Gateway-based play in the early professional era.

Playstyle

Protoss units are expensive but powerful — quality over quantity. Gateway units like Zealots and Dragoons form the backbone, while tech units like High Templar (Psionic Storm) and Reavers (Scarab drops) provide game-ending splash damage. Protoss excels at timing attacks and decisive engagements where superior unit quality overwhelms opponents.

Strengths

  • + Plasma shields regenerate over time on all units and buildings
  • + Probes can warp in buildings and immediately return to mining
  • + Powerful splash damage options (Psionic Storm, Scarabs, Archons)
  • + Observers provide permanent cloaked detection
  • + Recall and Stasis Field offer unique tactical options

Weaknesses

  • - Most expensive units in the game
  • - Dependent on Pylon power fields for building placement
  • - Losing Pylons can disable groups of buildings
  • - Limited early-game harassment options
  • - Poor at fighting in small chokes with large unit models
